First TIE project day at GBN

To push the COMENIUS-Project, we had our first TIE project day on 27th January 2010 for the 8th and 9th graders. It took place from the first until the 6th period with about 350 pupils making posters about different issues concerning us and our partners in Europe. After finishing these posters they were assessed by pupils to find out the three best ones of all classes.

During their working time the pupils made posters about clichés and prejudices of Germany and its neighbour countries coming to the result that all French people carry a baguette under their arm while they are waiting for the Metro, Englishmen are normally staying at the bus stop under their umbrella while the Pole waits for a chance to steal a car. Also the question if the Polish are rather drinking Vodka or eating cabbage soup came up. However, in the end this was turned into the recognition that we are all Europe.

Others were standing in the kitchen and trying to fix an enormous European meal consisting of dishes from different countries with the help of some teachers and a professional and well known cook from Hanover.

Another possibility to experience Europe was to do a typical kind of sports like Rugby. Usually Germans don't play it while it is very popular in France and in Britain. So first the class learned the rules and later on they tried to play the game in the gym. Another definite highlight of the day was the visit at the professional football club of Hanover 96. Here pupils conducted an interview with the Finnish player Mikael Forssell asking him about his experiences playing in different European countries.

Other groups collected information about the geography, the history and the culture of the different partner countries while some groups made interviews with persons from other European countries and conducted the surveys prepared in Manchester asking classes of our school. As well to be brought to Champagné in March will be the results of the art project, which interpreted four European monuments, the Brandenburg Gate, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Wawel.

In a relaxing and happy atmosphere it was easy to work and everyone learned a lot, although the time did run out quickly towards the end of the day.
