The First Project Day at St. Monica’s High School, Manchester

An early start for the students with the first half of our Year 9 ready to go at 8.45a.m! The assembly hall was set up with 20 tables for 20 groups of 5 or 6 students each. The second half of the year would begin their session at 11.00a.m.

The year 9 TIE Group had worked very hard to set up the programme of activities which had been planned to be fun, to be interactive and also to consider the question ‘how European am I?’ We had a diary room which students visited to express their feelings about being part of Europe. As part of the project we had also been involved in cooking a range of European food and the canteen area had been ‘themed’ with flags and special European menus during lunchtime...

The programme of activities was as follows:

Introductions – Presentation by the TIE Group

  1. European Country Quiz – using IT
  2. Quiz - What do you know about Europe?
  3. Picture Quiz – Do you recognise famous Europeans?
  4. Research Project- The Countries of Europe
  5. European Attitudes Questionnaire
  6. Music Quiz
  7. European Literature Work
  8. Information about the Essay/Story/Poem Competition
  9. Poster Activity – A cartoon/picture to sum up your feelings about being European

Each table had a laptop which gave access to the internet for research purposes and a number of teachers joined the groups to give support.

Before and during the project day the TIE group had conducted a small market research project to discover student’s views on Europe and whether the project day had managed to change the ideas of students as to their place in Europe. This research together with the diary room interviews and an evaluation sheet collected at the end of the morning led us to believe that the event had been most successful in allowing students to answer the question ‘ how European am I? Further many students commented that being TIED into Europe can also be really good FUNNNNN!
