Special visit on European Day - Mr Krüger of Eurostat came to GBN

On 10th May 2010 Mr Andreas Krüger, working for the EU, spent his day at our school the GBN because the EU sends its German employers to their old schools to promote the EU around the European day on May 9th. Since Mr Krüger’s old school was not interested in talking to him he came to our school because the GBN is a European school and his family lives in the area. He gave presentations about the EU in general and his job for the tenth grades and his day ended with an interview with some students of our class “Together in Europe” project group.
In the beginning he explained to us how he got his current job and what he connects with the EU. He told us that at Eurostat in Luxembourg, the agency he working for, they are working in small multicultural groups of three to twelve people with everyone using English to communicate. At the EU there are jobs where you have to travel a lot like people dealing with nuclear power plants. Mr Krüger, however, is mostly working with statistics, that is why he does not have to travel a lot and gets his material mainly sent by the member countries.
Later on we talked about current problems in Europe, especially concerning economic problems. Also, he explained his own opinion on matters of European integration (e.g. touching on the question if Turkey should join) and democracy in the EU.
After that we took pictures with a newspaper journalist. We are glad that we had the possibility of talking to someone like him offering us another perspective on Europe.
